At worst, dual booting was always an option. I knew I wasn’t the only one! There must be dozens of us! Dozens! When Apple switched to Intel chips, there was a nice window there (no pun intended) when Mac users would usually eventually get ports of PC games. Or maybe I’ll skip the PC and pay for a game streaming service? I wonder how many games will run well with an M1 Ultra in macOS.

I’m worried that my next upgrade is going to cost about 3 times my previous one, because instead of a $3000 iMac, I might want a $4000 Mac Studio, a $2000-$3000 PC for gaming, and who knows what high end monitor ($1600 Studio Display and high end KVM switch?). Previously, the 27” iMac was the move because you could get a top spec Core i9 with a decent midrange graphics card (Radeon RX 5700 XT on the most recent model), while having the ability to dual boot macOS and Windows. What’s the move for someone who prefers macOS for daily use and work (software engineer, so CPU performance / compile time is important), but also likes to game from time to time (mostly first person shooters and racing games)? If you had to build the machine today then that's applicable, but it skews the comparison. I also don't think you can compare scalper prices on GPUs vs. But it does make sense for the apples-to-apples comparison here. 16 GB is plenty in almost every use case. You can easily buy a $50 or $100 case, $200 MOBO, and I doubt 1% of computer users would have use for more than 32 GB of RAM. This of course assumes you're building a new, high end system and buying expensive versions of everything. But it's not like it's a slam-dunk comparison.

Certainly not awful if power budget is no object and you want to be able to play Windows games, one of the handful of things the Studio absolutely can't do. So that's what, $2,200 minimum? Mostly driven by the GPU? And almost certainly a whole lot bigger than the Studio. A quick sweep of recently completed eBay listings suggests you could find one in the $800-900 range right now if you tried. Imagining a magical world where you can buy the GPU for what EVGA is asking for it, this 3070 is $720. You could add a Vetroo v5 for $35 or some kind of AiO loop for $200. For our purposes let's assume you'll use the in-box Laminar cooler, but I haven't tested it so idk what kind of throttling you'd see if you turned the power limits off. A non-K i9-12900 is $530 on Newegg right now.

1TB SSD is about $150 for a 980 Pro (if you wanted a budget SSD you could go for something around $100). It's about $300 for the same amount of DDR4 and the performance won't be THAT different, so let's say you're using a feature-equivalent DDR4 board for a lower price bound. 64GB of DDR5, if it's in stock, is a whopping $550 right now. Budget maybe $200 for a case and a decent PSU (I'm using an 850W EVGA thing)

Having a dedicated GPU in it makes that tough to do because they're still tough to buy, but napkin math for a custom-built: What's the cost comparison against the Intel system?
